Why Cybersecurity Matters to Everyone — Not Just to People in IT

By Roberson Cesar Alves de Araujo

We live in a moment where our entire routine is connected: mobile banking, cloud photos, online medical appointments, tap-to-pay, remote work. Technology has made life easier, but it has also expanded our exposure.

And this is where cybersecurity comes in.
It’s not only about firewalls, hackers, and “IT stuff.”
It’s about real life, people, and protection.

What’s truly at risk?

  • Personal data (documents, medical history, location, finances).
  • Digital reputation, which today is as valuable as real-world reputation.
  • Businesses and essential services, which can go offline due to security failures.

International studies show that attacks and data breaches continue to grow, driven by artificial intelligence and automation, affecting both large organizations and everyday users.

⚠️ What changed in 2025

Threats are now faster, more precise, and fully automated.
Attacks that once required advanced hacking skills can today be executed using tools anyone can download.

My professional perspective

After more than 25 years working in IT, infrastructure, SOC operations, governance and cybersecurity, I’ve learned that security isn’t an “extra”, it’s the foundation.

Many organizations only value security after a crisis.
But as I often say in consulting and team discussions:

Companies only realize the importance of a door when someone gets in who shouldn’t have.

In my day-to-day work leading technical teams, I always highlight three essential points:

🔸 1. Security is everyone’s responsibility

Even those who “don’t understand technology” play a crucial role.
The human factor is still the weakest link.

🔸 2. Governance prevents chaos

Best practices such as ISO 27001, ITIL, COBIT, and ISO 20000 provide structure, predictability, and maturity.

🔸 3. Preventing is far cheaper than responding

Cybersecurity is not an expense — it is business continuity.

For non-experts, where should you start?

Here’s a simple, non-technical checklist:

Use strong and unique passwords
Enable two-factor authentication (2FA)
Keep your phone and computer updated
Be skeptical of links and “urgent” messages
Think before you click
Protect your data the same way you protect your home

Technology evolves quickly, and so do cyber-threats.
Today, more than ever, digital security is personal security.
